Target group: Both deaf and hearing people who would like to learn more about the many facets of German Sign Language (DGS) and the life of deaf people in Germany, e.g. learners of DGS, students and people who work in the fields of sign language interpreting, education and training. No previous knowledge is required. Concept: All volumes are written in easy-to-understand German and include videos on the content in German Sign Language (DGS), which can be accessed via QR codes and internet links. The content is supplemented by numerous sign language examples in the form of photos and videos. Important technical terms are explained both in the text and in a glossary. Specific literature references are provided for further study of the various topics. Volume 1: When was DGS legally recognised as a language? What are the main intercultural differences between deaf and non-deaf people? What is the difference between signs and gestures? How are gestures arranged to form a sentence? Is gendered language used in DGS? The first volume provides easy-to-understand answers to typical questions that arise when dealing with DGS and the Deaf communities.
