10 epilators in comparison
Stiftung Warentest tested ten epilator models. We have the results.
Epilation hurts like shit, but is just as effective as it is painful. Gritting your teeth a little can give you up to four weeks of hair-free time. Worth considering if you're going on a longer (beach) holiday. Once you have decided in favour of this depilation method, the question arises: Which model? Stiftung Warentest tested ten models with the help of 24 test subjects. Five were categorised as 'wet-dry epilators' and five as 'dry epilators'. In the test laboratory, the devices were analysed for the following aspects, among others: How thoroughly are the hairs removed? Is the skin protected? Is it easy to use? What about housing stability, waterproofness and the battery?
Wet-dry epilators
You can use the following epilators both in the shower and on dry skin. The advantage of wet epilation is that your skin relaxes under the warm water and the pores open up. This reduces the pain a little.
Place 1
Test winner with a score of 1.8 "good"
Two models from Braun share the winner's podium. The Silk-épil 7/880 SensoSmart
removes wet hair thoroughly and is comparatively quiet. It uses a light signal to let you know if you are pressing too hard. We do not carry this model in our range, but the following models are identical:
The Braun Silk-épil 9/980 SensoSmart SkinSpa, which we don't carry in our range, also comes in first place.
The Silk-épil 9/980 SensoSmart SkinSpa, which we don't carry in our range, also comes in first place.
Place 2
Grade 1.9 "good"
In second place was the ES-DEL8A from Panasonic. It removes hairs thoroughly thanks to two epilating rollers and has three power levels, a stable design and different attachments. Although the battery can be charged quickly, its runtime is comparatively short. The test subjects voted it their favourite.
Place 3
Score 4.0 "sufficient"
Third place went to the Philips Satinelle Prestige BRE651 and the Silk-épil 5/ 890 SensoSmart from Braun, neither of which we carry in our range .
Dry epilator
The following models must not come into contact with water and must therefore be used on dry skin.
Place 1
Grade 2.2 "good"
The Silk-épil 3-410 from Braun is particularly suitable for removing hair from the legs. In areas such as the underarms and bikini line, the procedure is only satisfactory. It does not have a rechargeable battery and only works with a mains cable. We do not have this model in our range, but we do have identical alternatives:
Place 2
Score 2.6 "satisfactory"
In second place was the Satinelle Essential dry epilator from Philips, which we do not carry in our range.
Place 3
Score 3.0 "satisfactory"
The sturdy Perfect'liss from the brand BaByliss delivers satisfactory results. It lacks a shaving attachment and battery, which is why the appliance must always be plugged in. Some test subjects criticise the unpleasant noise that the epilator makes. The model is also difficult to clean.
Place 4
Score 4.5 "sufficient"
The HL 70 from Beurer not only shines with a pretty design, but unfortunately also with a lack of thoroughness, standstill when pressed too hard and poor housing stability. You can use it without a cable, but it is difficult to clean.
In last place is the Ideenwelt model from Rossmann, which we do not carry in our range.
