Advent calendar opened: feel the power of gravity

We tested out advent calendars so that you don't have to. We were allowed to open all the doors in October. That way, you know which calendar could be the right one for you.

A few weeks ago, we came up with a supposedly good idea: testing out advent calendars from our shop. The problem: we have 1,000 different ones available in our range. So, we decided to go with a random selection. Hit or miss?

What does the manufacturer promise?

According to Ravensburger’s product description, this advent calendar contains building blocks for the Gravitrax marble run, including a festive gold marble. The calendar also contains codes that you can use to download tracks in the Gravitrax app. According to the manufacturer, «an understanding of science is sharpened and gravity can be experienced at first hand» by freely designing the marble run.

What can it do?

Not much without a Gravitrax starter set. You have to have that to get started with this advent calendar. As with the other advent calendars, the Gravitrax version has 24 doors. Behind each one, you’ll find an element that enables you to expand your run. For example, there’s a six-pack of crossings that have never featured in a set before.

Who is it right for?

Gravitrax newbies should steer clear. If you don’t already have a Gravitrax marble run, this advent calendar is useless. But if you’re a fan and you’ve already got a few sets – or all of them – it’s definitely worth it. Along with the usual parts, the calendar also has a few new stones that aren’t available in any other set.

Is it worth the money?

If you compare the price of the advent calendar with the starter set, it doesn’t really stack up with the number of stones. However, if you’d like rare stones for your collection that you can’t get anywhere else, you won’t be able to resist this advent calendar. Then the money is secondary.

Rating: 12 out of 24 doors
