Amorelie survey shows: period sex is more socially accepted

The question of sex during menstruation is polarising: For most, it was a taboo for a long time. But the Sex Report 2022 shows a clear trend.

When I meet my friends for coffee, we like to talk about sex. In all the details. If that's the case for you too, perhaps you've also discussed the bloody facts - more specifically, whether you also exchange intimacy during menstruation. What strikes me: Just a few years ago, it was pretty "ewww", "yuck" and unthinkable for the vast majority of people. Now, however, period sex seems less disreputable.

26 per cent of respondents have sex during menstruation

Surveys also show that I'm not mistaken and that social conventions are softening: in the Sex Report of the lifestyle platform Amorelie, 2000 people from German-speaking countries are asked about their sex lives every year. The results for 2023 are still pending. But the analysis of the 2022 report already showed a change. This is what the Amorelie press office told me when asked:

  • 26 per cent of respondents said that they have penetrative sex during their period
  • 13 per cent have sex, even without penetration
  • 62 per cent do not have sex at all during their period

For comparison: in 2018 and 2019, only 13 per cent and 16 per cent respectively said they had sex during their period. At 26 per cent in 2022, this figure has doubled within four years. In addition, one fifth of respondents perceive period sex as more socially acceptable.

Sexual intercourse can alleviate menstrual cramps

Whether it feels good to be intimate during your period is, of course, individual. Period sex certainly offers health benefits: Medicine explains that an orgasm (including masturbation, of course) can relieve pain and cramps. This is due to the endorphins released. Sex can also ensure that your period is over sooner: the movements help to shed the lining of the uterus so that bleeding stops sooner.

Soft tampons prevent blood stains

Don't want to miss out on sex, but don't want a bloody sheet? You'll find plenty of soft tampons in our shop that you can wear during sexual intercourse. The cordless models from Joydivision are pushed in deep like an absorbent foam wall and, according to our customer reviews, feel very soft. So they shouldn't interfere with sex.

If you're worried about getting it out without a string, you can also reach for the Nevernot brand. They offer optional organic cotton tampon strings for their soft products. If required, you can pull these through a tab and tie them before inserting. According to the manufacturer, the Soft tampons are 100 per cent free of harmful substances and certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100.
