Another subscription plan from HP - now you pay monthly for the whole printer

Ink or toner for the printer on a plan - HP has already been offering this for several years. But now the printer group is going one step further.

The "HP All-In Plan" is an extension of the existing "HP Instant Ink" model. It works like this: you regularly receive new ink cartridges or toner from HP as long as you pay your monthly plan fee. The amount depends on the number of pages you print per month.

In order to use the ink subscription, however, you still had to buy the printer with the existing plan. In the new All-In plan, the hardware is now also available for a monthly fee.

The plan, which is initially only available in the US market, costs at least 6.99 US dollars. This includes 20 printed pages and the rental fee for the current HP Envy model. The model is already available (as of March 2024) for less than 70 francs or euros in our shop.

If you print more, for example 700 pages, you pay USD 35.99 per month and get an OfficeJet Pro model from HP in the price range of 100 to 200 euros or francs.

As with the ink subscription, it is also possible to print more pages than purchased in the allotment. This costs an extra dollar per 10 to 15 pages.

Is HP's all-in subscription worth it?

The HP printer-plus-ink subscription is not a leasing or financing plan. When your plan ends, the printer goes back to HP. Even the ink cartridges that you still have will no longer work - thanks to chips in the cartridges.

And the conclusion of such a plan needs to be carefully considered, because the contract period is two years. After all, there is a 30-day trial period. But after that, cancelling the subscription is expensive, as HP charges a hefty penalty fee. Similar to the cancellation of mobile phone contracts or internet subscriptions.

The price for the plan sounds attractive at first glance. For a 700-page quota, the cartridge plan currently costs 27.99 US dollars in the USA. If you book the all-in plan with printer, you'll pay 35.99 US dollars, which is eight US dollars more. Converted to a term of 24 months, the Office Jet Pro printer costs 192 US dollars. That's more than if you buy it outright. However, you have the guarantee from HP that they will send you a replacement device the next working day in the event of a problem. And at the end of the 2-year contract, you have the right to a new printer model.

For the total bill, however, you should also bear in mind that you already have higher costs for the cartridge service compared to the individual purchase. In total, you will therefore pay quite a high surcharge if you have an HP subscription.

It is not yet known if and when the "HP All-In Plan" will come to Europe.
