Could these artwork-style drying racks be a breath of fresh air for your home?

Designs are constantly being reinterpreted. Clothes horses are one of the most interesting examples of this right now.

At the most recent «Maison&Objet» furniture expo in Paris, I came across some creatively designed clothes drying racks that really make a statement. Though there’s still room for improvement, these designs give me hope that we’ll soon be able to dry our clothes in a much more stylish way.

Foldwork by Studio Berg

Imagine if your home were a gallery where day-to-day life merged with art; where everyday objects were artistic masterpieces. Studio Berg’s Foldwork collection is made in that very vein. The series’ versatile wall sculptures can be used as clothes racks, towel rails or even magazine racks. Handmade in Poland using powder-coated steel, they’re available from the Studio Berg shop in numerous colours and in brass.

Ylo and Pavo by Frau Caze

The Ylo and Pavo designs by Frau Caze combine the best of both words. Each design is a drying rack that doubles as a wall sculpture. Once mounted on the wall, they give you space to hang up laundry and store accessories. Pavo can be folded up to save space, while Ylo has hangers to accommodate several items of clothing.

Has this piqued your curiosity? It’s certainly piqued mine. Inspired by the designs above, I went looking for clever, aesthetic drying racks in our range and came across these examples:

Arredamentiitalia’s wall-mounted clothes horse

This wall-mounted dryer combines wood and powder-coated aluminium with flexible nylon wings you can open and close. When open, it measures 63 × 69 × 80 centimetres. Closed, it’s super flat, with a depth of just three centimetres.

Foppapedretti’s Octopus series

The upright clothes horse and wall-mounted drier from Foppapedretti’s Octopus series are anything but ordinary. With their extendable legs and arms, they offer space for smaller loads of laundry when open. Once you’re done using them, they can easily be folded away. Since they’re attractively designed, you don’t have to shift them out of sight as you would with grey, metal clothes horses.

En.Casa’s wooden clothes horse

En.Casa’s tower-style drying rack really saves space and allows you to dry towels and clothes efficiently. Made from 100 per cent bamboo, its attractive appearance has won me over.

Admittedly, these design pieces aren’t any good for mountains of laundry. But hey, maybe they’re not supposed to be. They’re ideal for laundry that still needs to dry a little or stuff that isn’t quite ready to go in the washing basket, and are unassuming storage solutions. They breathe fresh life into the world of clothes drying racks, which, let’s face it, could be a heck of a lot prettier.

The Galaxus range is currently dominated by practical clothes horses boasting lots of space for little money. They’re ideal for utility rooms and communal laundry rooms in apartment buildings. But let’s be honest, they won’t be winning any beauty contests anytime soon, will they?
