DJI Mavic Mini, the always-on drone
At less than 250 grams, the mini drone weighs barely more than a smartphone. Nevertheless, it is more than just a toy.
The DJI Mavic Mini measures 140×82×57 mm when folded. It weighs 249 grams - ready to fly with battery. This makes it exceptionally portable for a drone that is more than just a toy.
A weight of less than 250 grams means that the drone is considered a toy in Germany and some regulations do not apply to it. However, there are still enough regulations that you must observe when flying. For example, when using the camera.
Camera
And of course the Mavic Mini has a camera. It takes photos with 12 megapixels and videos with 2.7K - with 2720 x 1530 pixels a middle ground between Full HD and 4K. The aperture of the lens is f/2.8, the closest focusing distance is one metre. The built-in gimbal stabilises the camera on three axes. To take photos and videos, you also need a memory card - the Mavic Mini has no built-in memory.
No object recognition
The scope of delivery includes a remote control that works together with a smartphone and the corresponding DJI Fly app. This can show you a live video on the screen, the range of the HD videos (720p) is two kilometres.
The app offers tutorials, can trigger some simple flight manoeuvres and return "home" independently. Under optimal conditions (no wind), the Mavic Mini achieves a flight time of 30 minutes according to DJI.
In contrast to the large Mavic Pro, the mini drone has no side sensors and is therefore unable to recognise obstacles independently. As a consolation, there is a removable propeller guard.
The DJI Mavic Mini is expected to be available from 11 November. Pre-ordering is now possible and you can also win: We are giving away a DJI Mavic Mini. Simply click on the enter button.

An interest in IT and writing landed me in tech journalism early on (2000). I'm interested in how to use technology without being used. I prefer to spend my free time making music, where I compensate for moderate talent with excessive enthusiasm.
