Fool's errand: Police locate thieves thanks to Apple location function

The police were able to track down and arrest a gang of burglars on Saturday thanks to the tracking function of the Apple AirPods.
The Dortmund police officers were certainly delighted: after robbers stole AirPods from Apple from an apartment block, they didn't have to search for long: With the help of the owner of the AirPods, they were able to locate the headphones using the "Where is?" app.
According to the police, the perpetrators broke into the flat on the upper floor on Saturday night. In addition to the stolen in-ear headphones, the police also seized a safe that had been broken into, cash, mobile phones, a firearm and a large amount of tobacco.

Caught thanks to tracking function
With the help of the owner of the AirPods, the headphones were located using the "Where is?" app. When the emergency services knocked on the thieves' front door, they tried to climb onto the roof through a window and then flee through a skylight into the neighbouring house, according to the police. Unsuccessful: the projectors took the three robbers into custody in their hiding place in the attic.
Apple's "Where is?" app allows users to track the location of various Apple products via a connected iCloud account - even when they are offline. This means that some devices can continue to transmit their location for up to 24 hours after they have been switched off or have virtually no battery left. To disable this function, the Apple ID password is required. This makes it difficult for someone else to use the device themselves or sell it on.
