Galaxus heading towards full range
The young online department store Galaxus has increased its product range more than sixfold in 18 months – from 50,000 products to over 300,000 products. With over 100,000 products, the new DIY + Garden range has played a major role in this growth. This includes DIY products, car accessories and safety solutions as well as garden tools, barbecues and smart home products. Top brands in the new range are Kärcher, Makita, Bosch, Gardena und Black & Decker. The aim is a full range, equivalent to what Galaxus offers in Switzerland.
The timing for the new DIY + Garden range is just right
The expansion of the Galaxus product range has come at the right time, as the demand for DIY and gardening products increases rapidly every spring. This year, the increase in demand has doubled compared to previous years – a result of the warmest April since weather records began and of the COVID 19 pandemic. This trend is likely to continue in the coming weeks. According to a current study by McKinsey & Company on consumer behaviour in times of COVID-19 in Germany, about one third of the population plans to invest more time in working on the house and in the garden in the next few weeks.
German and Swiss Galaxus customers are alike
The Galaxus Community in Germany has similar interests to the Community in Switzerland: magazine articles written by the editorial team such as «Tomato project: planting the seeds», «Making your own solo game» and «DIY flowerpots made by my daughter» are very popular both on galaxus.de and galaxus.ch. The top-selling products are also comparable: wet + dry vacuums, high-pressure washers, lawn mowers and charcoal BBQs are among the top ten best-selling products in Germany and Switzerland. One difference, however, is that there’s a much higher demand for garden hose carts and hose reels in Germany than in Switzerland. Gas BBQ grills, on the other hand, are much more popular in Switzerland than in Germany.
Expectations exceeded
In November 2018, Galaxus was launched in Germany with five employees, ten suppliers and 50,000 products from consumer electronics and computing. Since then, the subsidiary of the Swiss e-commerce market leader Digitec Galaxus has grown rapidly and now has around 40 employees, 200 suppliers and over 300,000 products. «The growth of Galaxus in 2020 has clearly exceeded our expectations,» says Managing Director of Galaxus Deutschland, Frank Hasselmann, and adds: «the combination of online shop and genuine advice strikes a chord in Germany.» This is reflected in the usage data: Galaxus now records around one million visitors per month and since its launch, more than 130,000 customers have placed an order in the shop. Amidst the corona pandemic, sales are at pre-Christmas level and the monthly revenue is about 200% above last year. Home office equipment, home entertainment electronics, toys, hair trimmers – and now also DIY products – are particularly popular at the moment.
