PlayStation Portal review: unnecessary gadget or essential PS5 accessory?
by Domagoj Belancic
The Playstation Portal is actually designed to stream PS5 games. This allows you to game their games away from the PS5. With a jailbreak, two security experts have managed to play PS Portable games on the handheld.
Last autumn, Sony launched the Playstation Portal. The first handheld in over ten years from the Japanese tech giant. Although there are some good features, our colleague Domagoj's verdict was rather mixed. Battery (too) weak, streaming shaky, sound thin.
The streaming device itself cannot play games. At least until now.
The two security experts Andy Nguyen and Calle Svensson have succeeded in jailbreaking the Playstation Portal. This means that they can still run software on the console that is not actually intended for the Playstation Portal.
The emulator software PPSSPP runs on your Portal. With this software, it is now possible to emulate games from the 20-year-old Playstation Portable (PSP) handheld. In an image published by the two parties involved, you can see how "GTA - Liberty City Stories" runs on the PS Portal.
Obviously, Nguyen and Svensson did not need direct access to the PS Portal's hardware. The built-in hardware, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SOC with 6 GB of memory and the pre-installed, customised Android, was sufficient for playing PS Portable games. Nevertheless, it took more than a month and "hard work" to realise this project. Bitter: They do not reveal any details about the procedure - you will also look in vain for instructions on how to copy them from Nguyen or Svensson. So you'll still have to make do with the streaming function. <p
I've been tinkering with digital networks ever since I found out how to activate both telephone channels on the ISDN card for greater bandwidth. As for the analogue variety, I've been doing that since I learned to talk. Though Winterthur is my adoptive home city, my heart still bleeds red and blue.
