Google Pixel Watch 2: More performance and new functions

Thanks to new sensors on the back of the smartwatch, the Google Pixel Watch 2 can now also measure stress.

At first glance, the new Google Pixel Watch 2 looks inconspicuous. It uses the same design as the previous model, but offers a few surprises. According to the manufacturer, the watch has received some improvements, including a new, more powerful processor. Instead of an Exynos 9110 chip from Samsung, the smartwatch uses a "Qualcomm 5100" processor, which is supported by a "Cortex M33" coprocessor.

New sensors enable new health functions

New sensors on the back give the Google Pixel Watch 2 additional functions. The EDA sensor, which is already built into Fitbit devices, is designed to recognise your stress level. This sensor uses microscopic beads of sweat to continuously measure electrodermal activity (EDA). According to Google, the smartwatch will also record your heart rate, skin temperature and heart rate variability and analyse them in relation to your stress level. A new multi-path heart rate sensor is used to measure your heart rate more accurately. Google promises that this delivers accurate results even during intense physical activity.

The Pixel Watch 2 is designed to automatically recognise seven types of sport, including running and cycling outdoors. The smartwatch should track these training sessions automatically. You don't have to press any buttons when you start or stop training. According to Google, another fitness function is "pace training". It monitors and controls your pace during your exercises.

Like the first Pixel Watch, the successor model also has standard functions such as emergency SOS, fall detection and Fitbit-based health and fitness management.

Higher battery life

The Pixel Watch 2 is said to offer a battery life of 24 hours with the always-on display activated. The predecessor model is said to have only achieved this maximum runtime with the always-on display deactivated. According to Google, the battery can be fully charged in just 80 minutes.

The body of the smartwatch is made of aluminium. The Pixel Watch 2 is available in the colours Matt Black/Obsidian, Polished Silver/Bay, Champagne Gold/Hazel and Polished Silver/Porcelain. The official sales launch begins on 12 October.
