Honor 20 Pro presented: Big zoom for a small price

The process is already well established: A few months after a Huawei smartphone, an Honor model from the subsidiary company follows with the same new functions, for less money. In this case, the Honor 20 Pro is the cheaper version of the Huawei 30 Pro - with night mode for the camera and a 30x digital zoom.
There are a total of four cameras on the back of the Honor 20 Pro, which is very eye-catching with a turquoise or purple colour gradient on the glass. At the launch of the smartphone, Honor was able to announce that the test experts from DxO Brand had given the camera a score of 111 points. This puts it on a par with the OnePlus 7 Pro, but just behind the Huawei P30 Pro.
Four cameras and a night mode
The main camera of the Honor 20 Pro has a resolution of 48 megapixels. The sensor used is the Sony IMX 586, which has a comparatively large area of 1/2 inch. The aperture is also large at f/1.4. An optical image stabiliser helps you when taking photos. This is also available for the telephoto lens with a resolution of eight megapixels. This offers you a triple zoom.
The third camera in the group delivers wide-angle shots with a resolution of 16 megapixels and a viewing angle of 117 degrees. The fourth camera only has a resolution of two megapixels and is designed for macro shots where you can get up to four centimetres closer to the subject.
On the software side, a night mode and a 30x digital zoom, which should be enough to photograph the moon, round off the offering.
Display with a hole
On the front of the Honor 20 Pro, you look at a so-called All-View display with a hole for the camera, which delivers selfies with a resolution of 32 megapixels. The 6.26-inch LCD has a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and has very narrow edges due to the hole. Unlike the Huawei P30 Pro or Mate 20 Pro, the fingerprint sensor is not located in the display but on the side of the smartphone.
The Kirin 980, which has already proven itself as a chipset in the Huawei Mate 20 and P30 Pro, is available in the casing. It is supported by eight gigabytes of RAM and the internal memory is 256 gigabytes in size.
The battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh. This is decent and should be enough for 15 hours of video playback. The fast-charging function should charge the battery by up to 55 per cent in 30 minutes.
Honor 20: Less memory and camera functions
The Honor 20 shares many similarities with the Honor 20 Pro. These include the chipset and the display. However, the memory is smaller at six gigabytes and 128 gigabytes. The same applies to the 3750 mAh battery, which can be charged up to 50 per cent in 30 minutes.

When looking at the back, the other colours - Midnight Black and Sapphire Blue with significantly less colour gradient - stand out. There are also four cameras. However, the Honor 20 lacks the telephoto lens and thus the optical zoom. Honor has replaced it with a 2-megapixel lens, which provides information on the depth of field for portrait shots. The 30x digital zoom is also missing.
Android on board
The operating system on the Honor 20 and 20 Pro is Android 9 Pie. Both are equipped with the Magic UI 2.1.0 user interface, but the future of the software is currently up in the air. The Honor parent company Huawei has been blacklisted in the trade dispute between the USA and China and Google is no longer allowed to work with the company on Android. However, this only applies to new devices and due to the 90-day extension, the Honor 20 and 20 Pro should be among the devices that still receive updates and run with Google services.
Whether the trade dispute will be resolved in six months' time and everything will continue to run unchanged or whether Huawei will then really release its own operating system for its devices cannot be reliably predicted at the moment.
Price and availability
The Honor 20 will be available in Germany from 4 June 2019. The recommended retail price is 499.90 euros. You will have to wait a little longer for the 599.90 euro Honor 20 Pro. This is not due to be released until July.
It is currently unclear whether the Honor 20 and 20 Pro will be available in Switzerland.

When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
