14 ventilation openings ensure a pleasant climate, while the magnetic rear light provides additional visibility. What's more, the "Ultra Fly Pro MIPS" from Lumos weighs less than 300 grams and the patented OptiGrip system prevents glasses from slipping. A bike helmet just the way I like it.

The American company Lumos has recently expanded its range of bike helmets with the new «Ultra Fly Pro MIPS». The manufacturer has paid particular attention to the 14 openings for improved ventilation. The previous model still had eleven

So much in advance: I find the number and arrangement of the vents very pleasant. The airstream and the sweat-wicking padding ensure good cooling on the move.

In addition, this bike helmet is equipped with the MIPS technology, which was developed to provide the wearer with the best possible protection against head and brain damage, especially in the event of a fall with an oblique impact as a result of a rotational movement.

This also sets it apart from its predecessor, the «Ultra Fly». The helmet also comes with other clever features.

Fidlock, OptiGrip and Firefly

The helmet is equipped with a Fidlock chin strap fastener. This makes the «Ultra Fly Pro MIPS» easy to put on and take off and, in combination with the FlexiFit retention and fit system, it sits securely and very comfortably on my head. Something I can't easily say about every other bike helmet.

The magnetic connection at the rear also allows the smart Firefly or Firefly Mini bike lights to be attached. I'm travelling with the Firefly. But beware: the lights on the helmet do not replace the lights on the bike. The law stipulates that a fixed light must be fitted to the bike. You can find out more about the rules and laws regarding lights on bikes here.

In addition, the patented OptiGrip system from Lumos holds the cycling glasses securely in the «glasses garage». I particularly like this feature. At last, my sunglasses stay firmly in place and don't fall off when I lean forwards.

With the OptiGrip mount, the sunglasses stay where they belong.

With the «Ultra Fly Pro MIPS», the manufacturer is expanding its product portfolio and, in combination with the lights, expanding the small Lumos universe. That makes perfect sense. Everything from the same supplier, everything compatible with each other.

The Firefly system is an intelligent bike light that combines synchronised LED lights with a magnetic, universal mounting system. It can be attached almost anywhere and only weighs around 30 grams. I have linked my detailed test report here.

In a nutshell

Lumos "Ultra Fly Pro MIPS"

This bike helmet has many advantages and, in my opinion, no weaknesses. It is lightweight, the cooling is very good and it is comfortable to wear. Thanks to the magnetic Fidlock system and the FlexiFit retention and fit system, the "Ultra Fly Pro MIPS" sits perfectly on my head.

My personal little highlight, however, is the OptiGrip mount for sunglasses. Maybe it's my lack of fine motor skills, but removing my goggles never really worked so smoothly with my previous helmets. It usually only took a few turns of the head or leaning forwards and the goggles fell off. Not so with this helmet. Here, the cycling goggles stay where they belong during the break.
