Body Sculpture Dumbbell set
Mirror, mirror on the wall ...
... who has the biggest dumbbell in their hand? People are pumping, moaning and eyeing each other and everyone else with suspicion. I don't like being there. I don't like it. Crime scene gym: the corner with the dumbbells.
It's my least favourite place in the gym. In the far right corner, it smells of pithy male sweat, there's testosterone in the air and the overall atmosphere is somehow tense. It's the place with the dumbbells and barbells, where men stand or lie in front of mirrors and fun becomes serious.
The fitness machine #1
If the push-up is the mother of all exercises, then the barbell is the father of all fitness equipment. Whether it's squats and deadlifts with a barbell or flys with dumbbells, there's hardly a muscle that you can't train very effectively with dumbbells. That's why I have no choice but to hold my breath and do my programme with the barbell in the back right corner:
- Multi-press squats
- Stretched deadlift
- Multi-press rowing bent over
Three sets of eight repetitions each and then quickly get out of this corner of hell.
To do this at home, I got myself two "dumbbell sets" from Body Sculpture.
The set consists of four cast iron weight plates in black (2 x 2.5 kg, 2 x 1.5 kg) and a threaded bar with chrome steel twist locks (length 30 cm). I mainly do curls and flys with the dumbbells.
I also like to work with the "vinyl dumbbell set" from Schildkröt.

The two dumbbells have a cast iron core and a hard-wearing, non-slip coating. This makes them resistant to sweat and scratches and easy to clean. These dumbbells are suitable for gymnastics, aerobics or fitness training. They only weigh three kilos each, but believe me, shadow boxing with them gets pretty strenuous pretty quickly.
