Nintendo presents the new Switch Lite

Cheaper, more compact, but no longer dockable. The new Switch Lite brings advantages and disadvantages, and is in fact no longer a Switch.

It has long been rumoured that Nintendo is working on two new versions of the Switch. A console with more power and cheaper where the controllers can no longer be removed. Now it's official: it's called Switch Lite.

Nintendo surprisingly unveiled the new member of the family on Wednesday. The Switch Lite is scheduled for release on 20 September and officially costs $200. The 5.5-inch LCD display is slightly smaller than the regular Switch (6.2 inches). The size and weight have also been reduced slightly. The regular Switch measures 102 mm x 239 mm x 13.9 mm, the Lite 91.1 mm x 208 mm x 13.9 mm with a weight of 275 g, compared to 398 g for the larger one. Resolution remains the same at 720p.

In addition to not using removable controllers, the Switch Lite can no longer be used with a dock - so you can't connect it to your TV. The HD Rumble and infrared motion sensor have also been eliminated. This means that the new Switch no longer lives up to its name. Nintendo thus positions the device as a pure handheld.

More battery and a real D-pad (directional cross)

Inside, not much has changed: you still have 32 GB of internal memory and the possibility of inserting a microSD card. According to Nintendo, however, the processor is more efficient than that of the classic Switch. The battery should therefore last 20 to 30 per cent longer. The layout of the buttons has remained practically unchanged. However, Nintendo has replaced the four arrow keys with a classic D-pad.

Because this Switch is smaller than the conventional Switch and the controllers are not removable, the Lite version is not compatible with Nintendo Labo. If a game requires a Joy-con or an infrared motion sensor, you can connect the Joy-con wirelessly to the Switch Lite.

The Switch Lite is available in yellow, turquoise, dark grey and the 'Zacian and Zamazenta' edition (light grey). As always when pre-ordering: first come, first served. Our Category Management will adjust the pre-order price as soon as we receive more information.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
