Playmobil and Volkswagen join forces
The traditional German brands Playmobil and Volkswagen are joining forces. In 2021, two VW classics will appear in Playmobil format for the first time: the original Bulli and the VW Beetle.
Playmobil has been teasing a new product on its Twitter channel since the end of August. At first, all that was known was that it would be a vehicle. Little by little, further tidbits of information were added until finally the curtain fell: Playmobil is launching two VW classics on the market. Or as Playmobil puts it: "Two great German icons promise a successful collaboration with cult potential".
Playmobil's new target group
Playmobil is expanding its target group and has recently been catering more to the interests of adults. Vehicles and cult objects seem to play a central role in this. A few months ago with the DeLorean from "Back to the Future" or the Mystery Machine from "Scooby-Doo" and now with the two VW classics Bulli and Beetle.
Everyone has known it for 70 years: the VW T1. A symbol of the hippie movement in the 60s and still a popular sight on today's roads. The camper van started an era that continues to this day. You can see camper vans on almost every street corner in cities and in most cases, the round VW logo adorns the radiator grille.
Almost better known than the Bulli is the Beetle. Long the best-selling car in the world (21 million), it served many families around the world well. It was a box office hit on the big screen with Herbie and German electro-pop pioneers Kraftwerk honoured the little vehicle by including its starting noise at the beginning of Autobahn.
The two models will be available from January 2021. And presumably that's not all that's coming from the VW-Playmobil collaboration, because Playmobil writes: "The two Volkswagen legends and Playmobil will continue to write automotive history together in the future." <p
