Sony RX100 VII: The new compact camera is even faster

Sony is already launching the next RX100. Number 7 brings improvements to the autofocus and video function.

For the RX100 VII, Sony has primarily worked on the speed. The autofocus is better and there is a new speed mode. The sensor is also new; however, nothing seems to have changed in the lens.

Even better for sports and action

When I tested the predecessor model RX100 VI, it was the first time in my life that I held a compact camera in my hands that was suitable for sports and action shots. In addition to the significantly extended zoom range, the fast autofocus and continuous shooting speed also made this possible.

The Sony RX100 VI on test: a benchmark or just an overpriced camera?

The new RX100 goes one better. It shoots 20 photos per second, without blackout in the viewfinder and with tracking autofocus. That alone is not an improvement on its predecessor. However, the RX100 VII has the latest autofocus recognition, which is also currently used in the Sony Alpha 9. This includes real-time tracking and eye autofocus.

The autofocus hardware is also better: 357 phase detection points and 425 contrast detection points compared to 315 phase detection points and 25 contrast detection points in the RX100 VI.

Another new feature is the "single-frame continuous shooting mode". The paradoxical name means that the camera shoots seven photos within a very short time and the photographer can select the best one. The speed can be set to 30, 60 or 90 images per second. The camera can perform up to 60 focus and exposure measurements per second.

Video function improved

Super slow motion recordings with up to 960 fps are possible in the video area. Real-time tracking and autofocus are also available for video recordings. Version 7 of the RX100 also has a 3.5 mm jack for an external microphone. The image stabilisation should also be better. The camera offers Hybrid Log-Gamma (HDR) and S-Log3.

Except for the microphone connection (circled in red), the RX100M7 looks exactly the same as the RX100M6.

Other than that, not much new

The rest of the camera is very similar to its predecessor. The lens offers a focal length of 24-200 mm with a lens speed of f/2.8-4.5. The sensor is new, but still has 20 megapixels. The viewfinder and the rotating LCD do not appear to have changed either. The weight and dimensions are practically identical to its predecessor.

The last RX100 is only one year old. High-end models are not normally released every year, so it is not surprising that the innovations are limited.

The camera is expected to be available from August 2019.
