The GoPro Hero 10, bringing 120 fps at 4K

GoPro’s action camera is entering its tenth generation. It’s faster than the previous model, delivering twice the number of frames for videos.

The GoPro Hero 9 is only a year old, but it’s already being followed up. Accordingly, the innovations of the GoPro Hero 10 aren’t all that revolutionary – even though this very word can be read several times in GoPro’s marketing material. A brief overview:

  • The sensor has a slightly higher resolution: 23 instead of 20 megapixels.
  • The new GP2 image processing engine provides higher processing speeds.
  • This results in frame rates twice as high as the GoPro Hero 9. At its highest resolution, 5.6K, the camera reaches 60 fps, achieving 120 fps at 4K. The higher speeds require faster memory cards: a microSD with at least V30 or UHS-3.
  • 8x slow motion is available at 2.7K instead of Full HD.
  • Video stabilisation has been improved.

The housing shape remains the same, which means that previous accessories can also be used on the new GoPro. Its 1720 mAh battery didn’t change either. Just as with previous versions of the GoPro Hero, number 10 offers voice control, live-streaming and webcam mode, is waterproof to a depth of ten metres and has three built-in microphones. Newer GoPro models can connect to the GoPro cloud on your home Wi-Fi network and automatically sync recordings. This does require a subscription coming in at 48 francs per year (as of September 16, 2021).

My interest in IT and writing landed me in tech journalism early on (2000). I want to know how we can use technology without being used. Outside of the office, I’m a keen musician who makes up for lacking talent with excessive enthusiasm.
