In two months' time, we'll be able to hustle and bustle again. The newest part of "The Settlers" will be released on March 17. The closed beta will even start in January.

Originally, "The Settlers" was supposed to be released in 2019. Several postponements followed, and then there was mostly radio silence. Now Ubisoft has announced the date of the new edition of the iconic building strategy game. On March 17, PC players can once again farm, hammer and go into battle.

In terms of gameplay, the title was originally based on parts three and four, which are among the most popular in the series. Current previews, however, give more of an impression of a real-time strategy game. There are three factions to choose from, each with a different look, play style and story. Graphically, the reboot stands out thanks to the Snowdrop engine ("The Division"). This makes the settlers scurry around in particular detail.

If you don't want to wait until March, you can register for the closed beta. It will take place from January 20 to 24. Interested parties can register on the Settlers page.

The "Settlers" series is almost 30 years old. The first part of the German developer studio Blue Byte appeared in 1993. In 2010, "The Settlers Online" followed, the last edition for the time being. The name Blue Byte has since disappeared. The studio has belonged to Ubisoft since 2001.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
