Using the GPS on the GoPro HERO Black!

With the new update to GoPro's 'Quik Computer' application, you can finally use the GPS data from the HERO 5 Black. Include in your videos the speeds you reach when mountain biking, the height at which you climb or how much influence the G-force has on you.

GoPro's "Quik Computer" app

  • Free software Quik I Computer - more info and download
  • Create stunning videos synchronised with music in just a few clicks
  • Import and organise your photos and videos automatically
  • GoPro Studio software included for more sophisticated editing
  • NEW: add indicators and graphs to your videos to show the speed, distance and altitude you've reached (with HERO 5 Black)

Use the GPS function of your GoPro HERO Black to complete your videos:

  • Information box with a real-time overview of speed (km/h, m/h), height, altitude change, date and time
  • Counter for current speed, compass included
  • Speed diagram for an overview of changes in pace over a period of time
  • GPS route: displays the route taken, as well as the current position
  • Acceleration: the calculation of G force during acceleration can be viewed, as can the change of direction.
  • Logo GoPro: can of course also be integrated

Data can be integrated using the GoPro telemetry system. This uses the HERO5 Black's GPS capabilities to collect GPS data for location, speed, altitude, acceleration, elevation gain and more. This data is then presented in the form of graphs integrated into the videos: as well as enriching the content, benchmarks and references now make it possible to compare experiences. These superimposed displays are also customisable: you can resize them, move the benchmarks and activate or deactivate the different graphs.

How it works

Important: only works with the GoPro Quik Computer app, the mobile version doesn't support it. To enable GPS on your GoPro HERO 5 Black: turn on the GoPro, swipe down on the screen, tap "Preferences" --> GPS --> yes. Before you start filming, make sure you have a GPS signal. As soon as the GPS icon appears, you've got the green light.

In the Quik Computer app Quik I Computer - download,

  • Processing - Settings --> set units of measurement at the bottom (metric or imperial)
  • open the video and, below the video, click on the counter symbol
  • select, add and separately place one insertion after another
  • click on the scissors symbol and choose the desired part (can also be the whole video)
  • record - increases accuracy of insertions
  • in the preview, you can see your version with reduced refresh rate

The video was made by Patrick, our kart driver and Category Leader Consumer Electronics. Thank you very much!
