The game is based on the pen-and-paper role-playing game Cyberpunk 2020 from 1990. According to the developers, its creator Mike Pondsmith is working closely with the game designers. The Cyberpunk 2020 system has been specifically adapted to fit a modern role-playing game. The title takes place in the sandbox environment of the metropolis Night City. The game's story is aimed at an adult audience, is non-linear, and offers multiple storylines. Additionally, the developers claim there will be a wide variety of weapons, equipment, and implants to enhance your character.

Compatibility with Xbox Series X. Cyberpunk 2077 will be backward compatible on next-gen consoles (Xbox Series X). The Xbox One version will also work on Xbox Series X on the release day of the current consoles. A later upgrade for Cyberpunk 2077 will fully utilize the hardware potential of the next-gen consoles and will be available for owners of the current-gen versions.
