With the OM-1 Mark Il, OM System has succeeded in consistently developing its MFT flagship. In addition to the completely new digital grey gradient filter, many detail improvements make photography easier. All in all, the new top model is one of the best MFT cameras and, due to its compactness and the comparatively low weight of the overall system, a very good choice for nature photographers, provided...
The complete switch by manufacturers from DSLRs to mirrorless system cameras means that the housings of current cameras have also shrunk significantly compared to the past. This is logical, as manufacturers no longer have to accommodate bulky mirror boxes in their housings. Nevertheless, there are still considerable differences in size and weight even in current cameras...
- High image quality
- Very detailed viewfinder
- Good autofocus motive detection
- 4K video does not utilise the entire sensor
Well over €2000 for a system camera with a small sensor? Yes, that can be a better choice than a full-frame model. Especially when it comes to photographing shy animals or searching for subjects in wind and weather. The OM System OM-1 Mark II is unique in this respect. Only the Panasonic Lumix G9 Il is similarly good, with slight compromises in autofocus and weather protection - but better for videos.
The OM-1 Mark II maintains traditional Olympus values and advantages of the MFT platform. The new top model is a lightweight, handy system camera, robust, fast and well equipped, including image stabilisation and many exciting functions such as HiRes mode, Pro Capture, LiveGND or starry sky AF...
- With the OM-1 Mark II, OM System is clearly focussing on wildlife and nature photographers, who benefit from the compact dimensions, the extensive telephoto options and the new AF system
- The new product offers too little for a switch from the first OM1 to the second generation
- Photographers with APS-C or full-frame cameras are put off by the relatively low resolution of the 20 megapixel sensor
The OM System OM-1 Mark II is a successful further development of its predecessor. The resolution has not increased, but the overall performance has been enhanced by a larger buffer memory, AF-moto detection and the digital grey gradient filter. In terms of price, this is in the range of entry-level full-format cameras...
- Extremely high speed
- Compact case
- Very good haptics
- Powerful image stabiliser
- Integrated virtual ND and dew filters
- No top level of image quality
The OM-1 Mark II, OMSystem's new MFT flagship, is not a revolution, but a sensible further development of the OM-1. The camera has been specially designed for nature photography, among other things because of its robust housing and the integrated Live ND and grey filters in different levels. Thanks to its high speed, it is ideal for wildlife and bird photography, for example.
