You have to use both. The USB is for the power and the jack plug is for the sound.
Wouldn't have discovered anything to set/turn this off. However, it doesn't bother me. I think it comes into its own in a dark environment, but it's not noticeable in a place where everything is rather bright.
According to the manufacturer's data sheet, this is correct.
