Wonderful piece of glass!
I also own the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II but the noise while focusing was way too loud when shooting weddings…
Otherwise the image quality is slightly better on the 1.4, the AF much quieter, you get a little more light in, the construction is a bit more solid. The price is quite decent for such a lens, although the 50mm 1.8 is probably the best lens for the price!
Overall, the 50mm f/1.4 is a fantastic lens that is just missing the L serie construction and weather sealing in my opinion.
If you don't have a 50mm yet, get the 1.2 if you're wealthy, the 1.8 if you're not shooting weddings or don't care care about the construction, the 1.4 if you don't fit in either of these categories.
My only hope for this lens at this price point would be to see Canon include a lens hood! It's not that complicated nor is it expensive! It's really a shame to have to buy it separately. And at CHF41.- a piece of plastic you better take care of it!!!
Pro
Contra
I've had the glass for a few days. It cuts an impeccable figure on the 5D Mark III. Since I often travel in the AL area for work, the open aperture is worth its weight in gold.
Beautiful bokeh
Good workmanship
Fast
Quiet USM operation
On a VF camera you should be careful with aperture 1.4.
With these sensors, the depth of field is even shallower than with APC. The AF point has to be exactly right. I can only recommend the lens. The workmanship alone speaks for the 1.4 instead of the 1.8.
If you want to get an idea of the difference in quality between the two lenses, you can get an overview at the following link.

Very good lens. The large aperture is worth its weight in gold.
The Sigma 30mm 1.4 is also highly recommended as it is a 50mm on an APS-C camera.
In my opinion, the lens is fast and reliable in focusing. (The Sigma 30mm often has misfocusing in low light).
@chrisg06: I can also confirm the compliments for the Canon EF 85mm 1.8, which is even better than the 50mm.
All three are very good: Sigma 30mm 1.4; Canon 50mm 1.4 & Canon 85mm 1.8.
To each his own focal length...
I've had it since yesterday, first photos are fast at f1.4, but have quite strong discolouration (chroma abberation). Reminds me of achromatic refractor telescopes. Maybe I'm just too 'picky', so you'd better do your own due diligence. Too bad you can't upload pix.
It is not without reason one of Canon's best non-L lenses. The 50 offers amazing optical performance. From f/2.8 it is good and from f/4 there is nothing to complain about, but below f/2, unfortunately, it is hardly usable. The AF is very good: fast, quiet and very accurate.
I thought about taking the 1.2/50 L, but I didn't see the point in paying the extra price of over 1000Fr. just for the L.
The ES-71II lens hood is unfortunately not included with this lens, but it is a must.
Ingenious lens! Beautiful bokeh effect! I can only recommend it, it's really fun. I use it on my EOS 550D.
