Good zoom, but not easy to use

Up to now I often used the 70-300mm (f:4-5.6). But the deer and foxes were simply too far away, which is why I bought the 150-600m (here is a photo taken on 6 October 2024 at 6.50 pm at sunset with the X-T5 at 600mm, 1/125 sec, ISO 6400, f:8, handheld and without a tripod).

At first I was rather disappointed with the lens and wanted to send it in for repair. Fujifilm's after-sales team gave me very helpful advice, all of which I already knew, but I didn't want to walk around with a tripod because the 150-600mm is already heavy and conspicuous enough compared to the 70-300mm.

Then I took pictures with both lenses at 300mm each. I realised that the 150-600mm needed significantly more light. I use a trick for this: you can set the exposure compensation (on the outside right of the X-T5) to -1 to -1.5 so that the exposure time is reduced and the photo is sharper. I noticed that the 150-600mm, in contrast to the 70-150mm, produces less aberrations (colour fringing) (actually none at all). Some of the details were also sharper (e.g. cat whiskers).
Here is another photo of the moon, taken on 8 November 2024 at 18:00 (600mm, 1/125s, f:8, ISO 1000), slightly enlarged, strongly darkened and contrast enhanced, but no sharpening of the image. As I didn't have a tripod with me, I simply placed the lens on a garden post.

The only disadvantage is that the 150-600mm is not very handy. There is a trick for this too: the lens comes with a strap that I put around my left armpit and carry the lens on my right arm, even with the camera strapped on.

    Strong part

Length and weight appropriate. Vignetting and distortion very good, sharpness at least good. 1/60 s handheld generally works thanks to stabiliser. Wears very well on the supplied strap --> First choice for paparazzi ;-) Sports and nature photographers.

    Pro

    • Magnification up to 18x vs. 35mm
    • effective image stabilisation
    • Good autofocus even when filming

    Incredibly sharp

This lens delivers extremely sharp images with my X-S10 (26Mpx). I am convinced that this lens will give even better results with the new Fuji 40Mpx.
