I now own all three lenses in the Contemporary series. I bought the 56mm specifically for portrait photography on my Sony A6600 and I am THRILLED. Sharp, brilliant bokeh, small, light, super processed. At the first test I was immediately fall in love, even if it forces me to move significantly more and by the 56mm is quite long for portraits. But the result is really an addition in the series. So far I had the Sony 16-55mm 2.8 G lens in use for clearly 4 digit purchase price. However, I now only use that for filming because I find the 16mm, 30mm and now the 56mm from Sigma so much more "awesome" on the camera than the zoom lens.
With a fixed focal length I don't want to keep changing lenses. That means I'm more deliberate about it than I was before. Now, together with the model, we think about what we want to show and say with the picture and specifically choose the fixed focal length that fits the picture. Only when everything is exhausted is the lens changed instead of quickly turning a ring.
I also find the image quality more than ingenious!
The already often quoted Focus by Wire doesn't have to be mentioned here. But on the 56mm I don't find it that bad... You will get everything sharp manually, believe me. It's just a pity that the settings are not kept after switching off the camera. But the portrait is also not quite as tragic as a landscape that you pre-focused during the day to photograph the Milky Way at night, for example.
Conclusion: I would recommend the 56mm from Sigma to anyone who is looking for sharp images, soft bokeh and a small, lightweight, portable fixed focal length for their APSC camera!!!!
Have tested many lenses and for me this lens is in price / performance by NO other lens to replace.
Clear purchase recommendation.

Very sharp and through the large aperture super bright and beautiful boket!
Great part! I had a grin on my face as soon as I unpacked it. The lens is compact and relatively heavy. Feels incredibly high quality. The materials and finishes are top notch. There is nothing to complain about the build quality. Beautiful aperture blades. So much for the exterior specs. Autofocus is really fast on my A6500, even eye autofocus works perfectly. Sharpness is terrific, I was surprised how much sharper it is (especially at the edges!), compared to e.g. the 18-135 which is also very good! Thanks to aperture 1.4 ISO 100-400 is sufficient for fast shutter speeds. Watch out for the depth of field at aperture 1.4 - there is not much sharp... It's not the lens, just more distance to the subject. Bokeh is perfect as expected. The focus ring is rubberized. I hope that does not become sticky by the time. Manual focus goes so lala, you have to turn from sharpness all the way forward to sharpness all the way back but a few times, this is very fine-tuned. For the fact that it is almost not suitable for macro, it is too finely graduated for me. Use or not, everyone should have this lens. Before buying a kit lens (like I did the 18-135): gather your courage and grab this Sigma first! Speed, sharpness, bokeh and mobility is what counts in the end. The 56mm (84mm on APSC) covers a lot of areas.
Update: the macro capabilities are impressive after all. Thanks to the light intensity and sharpness, great shots can be taken even at minimum distance!
