Ubiquiti AFi-R AmpliFi Mesh Router System
Ubiquiti AFi-R AmpliFi Mesh Router System
I have been looking for a solution to cover our house with Wi-Fi for a long time. We have Ethernet sockets in every room, so the most logical solution at first was the AC-Pro APs from Unifi. Unfortunately, they don't offer real roaming and the devices often remain connected to an AP on the ground floor despite the absolutely poor signal, even if there is another one 2 metres away. I therefore wanted a mesh solution with automatic distribution of the devices to the APs. After some research, I ended up with Amplifi from Unifi. This is primarily because other devices (e.g. those from Eero) are not available in Europe.
My conclusion after a few hours of tinkering: total fail. As in almost all EFHs in Switzerland, the individual storey areas are relatively small, but there are several storeys. They usually have reinforced concrete ceilings (for at least 40 years), and most newer buildings have underfloor heating.
I quickly discovered that Amplifi couldn't get the signal cleanly through the ceilings - the mesh points didn't have more than 20% signal anywhere and the throughput was subterranean. On the other hand, they transmit at full power, which is far too much for an average floor. For me, the solution is unfortunately unusable, i.e. I'm going back to the AC-Pros, even though they have (other) massive disadvantages.
Two things would have to improve for Amplifi to become usable in Europe:
1. it would have to be possible to have several routers that could be connected to each other via Ethernet backhaul. This would solve the problem of reinforced concrete ceilings. This has already been promised by Unifi.
2. the transmission power of the individual routers + mesh points should be adjustable so that one is not unnecessarily radiated. This is apparently not planned.
Apart from the coverage problems, these things are great - very easy to use!

Nice design (but not for CH, as the antennas hang from the socket with transition plugs like tractor wheels on a Porsche).
Not suitable to cover 3 floors in an average single family house. As soon as a concrete ceiling or a glass window is wiped, the speed is reduced to a minimum or the contact is immediately lost. Also, the system is not compatible with other products of the same company. That is, an outdoor AP can not be integrated into the mesh network. All in all, a complete flop.

Ubiquiti router installed and connected to the Internet, logged in via the PC, the router installed itself in the household with the basic configuration in a self-explanatory manner. "SUPER product"
As the router had a German plug, the adapter was sent to me afterwards without any problems.
