WD Elements Portable

Had now already several colleagues who had problem with this external HD
- ALL HDDs had after a short time (about 0.5 -2 years) already defective blocks, which led in part to data loss.
- HD has no SATA connector (internal) but directly a USB controller. So you can't just remove the HD and put it into a PC for data recovery. If the USB controller has a problem, the data is gone.
Therefore, there is only one star from me. I personally would NEVER use this WD Elements for important data (not even as a backup HD). There are better and almost equally expensive alternatives.

Erstes Mal, dass ich so eine schlechte Bewertung gebe / First time, that I give such low score / Première fois, que je donne une si mauvaise note.
I had 2 such devices, they BOTH broke in +/- 2 years, not being readable from the PC and performing a clicking sound when connected (they hadn't been moved much previously, this is not linked to a hit). My Toshiba one at least still works. No refund from WD. Hadn't even used them much.

Works great.
On an iMac (late 2012) I achieved 96 MB/s write and 98 MB/s read in the test.
The 2 TB drive from Toshiba was even slightly faster in the test, and is currently even slightly cheaper. And a little smaller and lighter as well.

We have bought 3 HD of this type in the family, 3 of them died within 3 years.
Another colleague also had problems with this HD:
If you have not backed up the data elsewhere, use a different HD!
1 pc. stutz out of 0.5m and defective
2 pcs. were permanently attached to the Mac and have the classic click... nothing works anymore...

Pro:
- 2tb - maximum possible at the moment
- Power via USB
- Price (paid only 100.-, 140.- I find too high)
Con:
- surprisingly high weight (thought all WD 2.5" were the same thickness, size and weight. not so).
- surprisingly thick
- Poor workmanship: only a little plastic around the case, slightly crooked connector
All in all: for 100.- top, for 140.- flop
anyone who needs 2tb for cheap will be happy with it.
