The Function

The lens hood (also known as a glare hood or sunshade) reduces side light entering the sensor. The so-called lens flares are minimized, which enhances image quality. Images appear less dull and low in contrast with the use of the sunshade. Additionally, the sunshade provides some protection for the front lens against rain and minor bumps or touches (fingerprints).
