Yes, this is possible and worthwhile. I tried it with two different Android devices and had no problems: very good sound, also very loud if desired.

However, I don't know what it looks like with the Apple phone - you might need an adapter there (what a foolish idea of Apple not to include a 3.5mm connector anymore...?).
