Hello, I would like to run a DS918+ with 4x8TB with my two sons. The NAS would be installed on one of the three of us and two of us would have to access it from outside. It should be a kind of cloud replacement for Dropbox, Google Drive etc., for photo storage and partial sharing for downloading. Question: Can such a solution be compared to a cloud subscription or is the access much too slow? Maybe someone has experience and can answer this. Thank you

Helpful answer

Basically, a Synology NAS with the appropriate configuration (e.g. drive) can be compared to a cloud subscription. Note, however, that the speed of access depends strongly on your internet connection at home. I'm currently running a DS414 with 50Mbit/s upload and access to photos is possible but not very exhilarating unless thumbnails are generated beforehand. With a synchronous 1 Gbit/s internet connection, the speed should not be a problem.

This is not a problem. I have external access to the NAS via DynDNS using the web file explorer. This means I can access all my data from any PC or mobile phone (regardless of OS) via a browser. Of course, port forwarding and possibly PAT must be configured on the router. Speed is also no problem (I have 1GB/s synchronous over glass).
