I have to have the TV permanently at the highest volume via the headphone socket in order to hear anything at all, as the speakers always go back to the lowest output level when I switch them off. It has a 3.5mm jack on the 'main speaker' (right) where you can adjust the volume, I don't know if this resets the sound, but it could also be a setting on the TV?

If your TV supports sound via Bluetooth, I would rather go for this variant, because there are fewer cables...
