Product details

The history of Hospitalhof Stuttgart began as a Dominican monastery in the 15th century. Since the Reformation, the monastery complex has been used as a hospital and nursing home. From 1895 until the end of the Nazi era, the buildings housed the police. After being completely destroyed at the end of World War II, it took almost fifteen years for reconstruction (1959/61), initially as a meeting place and conference center, and later also as an educational center for the Protestant Comprehensive Church Community of Stuttgart. The post-war building was replaced by a new structure from 2012 to 2014 - an award-winning architectural ensemble and an outstanding site of church presence in Stuttgart. This book particularly highlights the period from 1895, when a floor with detention cells was added to the cross wing for its new purpose as a police building. During the Nazi era, the criminal police, responsible for Sinti and Roma, homosexuals, politically and religiously persecuted individuals, and forced laborers, were based here. Jewish individuals were persecuted, harassed, and robbed at Hotel Silber, the headquarters of the Gestapo Stuttgart. Some were also imprisoned in the detention cells on Büchsenstrasse and were often deported to their deaths from the Inner North Station. The name Büchsenschmiere originates from this time. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the new Hospitalhof, this book presents a depiction of the eventful history of this place, accompanied by numerous photos and historical documents. It aims to add a previously almost unknown, highly significant chapter to the history of the city of Stuttgart and the history of Hospitalhof.
