Product details
Autodesk presents Civil 3D, a product for infrastructure planning. Infrastructure planning begins and ends with the survey point (manual surveying, laser data, 3D information in drawings, and much more). Survey data typically has only one z-height for each x and y coordinate (horizontal and vertical values). The Geotechnical Modeler expands this basic concept to an infinite number of 'z-heights' that can be assigned to an x and y coordinate. This corresponds to the layering sequence of a geotechnical investigation. As part of the tool, digital terrain models (DTM) are created from these heights, which can be represented in sections (profiles, longitudinal profiles, and cross-sections). Additionally, volume calculations are possible. This makes the tool versatile as a supplement to the standard delivery for planning purposes. Unfortunately, the Geotechnical Modeler has not been translated. The English-American terms are partially to be inferred. A direct translation is not advisable. The book attempts to provide a translation and explanation of the terms. Besides the lack of translation, the absence of soil representation according to German standards (DIN 4023 and adjustments) is also not addressed. According to Autodesk Germany, there are paid add-ons that can implement the hatching according to DIN 4023. The document does not address paid supplements. The book tries to present alternatives without paid add-ons to enable hatching according to DIN. Those who understand Civil 3D as an AutoCAD application in the traditional sense (AutoCAD applications from the 90s) will unfortunately not succeed. However, those who are willing to learn Civil 3D as a new 64-bit and consistent 3D software for civil engineering will take a step into the software reality of the coming decades. Civil 3D sets new standards in civil engineering, which many also refer to as 'BIM'.
