"Increase In Dissolved Organic Carbon: A Palaeolimnological Analysis" is a scholarly book that addresses the rising concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in freshwater lakes in the UK. Over the past two decades, elevated DOC levels have been observed in many of these lakes, which has significant implications for water quality as well as the carbon and energy balance of the ecosystems. The book explores various hypotheses aimed at explaining these trends, with a particular focus on the hypothesis that a reduction in acidifying emissions and thus in sulfur deposition, in conjunction with a decline in marine ion loading, may be responsible for the increase in DOC. Through a palaeolimnological analysis that applies existing transfer functions, a comprehensive reconstruction of past pH and DOC values is conducted using a dataset from 97 sampled lakes in the UK. This analysis provides valuable insights into the temporal changes related to sulfur deposition and the associated ecological impacts.
