Product details

This book is a concise introduction to the architectural construction of spaces, focusing primarily on recognizing and exploring different types of spaces. It is less about clarifying small details of materialization and more about addressing the larger questions regarding the character, desired impact, and characteristics of various spaces. In essence, it covers the fundamentals of good architecture. The volume was conceived by Piet and Wim Eckert, founders of the successful Zurich office E2A Architects and professors at the Chair of Building Construction at TU Dortmund. It discusses ten archetypal spaces and their effects, analyzing the ideas and specific conditions that form the core of the respective constructive decisions, thereby shaping the spatial impact. A variety of factors play a role in this – from the surrounding landscape, geological conditions, available materials, new approaches to familiar materials, to new forms of living and working. Special emphasis is placed on issues such as resource awareness, material cycles that need to be developed, recycling, or flexible uses and future repurposing possibilities of buildings. To illustrate all of this, the book draws on nearly 500 images, primarily referencing classic examples but also highlighting interesting contemporary buildings, thus illuminating a wide range of successful spaces.
