Did I understand correctly that I can simply connect the box via an HDMI connection? Or do I also have to connect it to my TV box and Playstation? In my opinion, this would make no sense.

You can plug 4 HDMI-capable devices into the syncbox. The box is then connected to the TV set with an HDMI cable. In other words: Plug the TV box and Playstation into the syncbox. It then automatically recognises which input is active.

The device has an HDMI output, which you connect to one of the HDMI connections on the TV using the HDMI cable supplied.
Then you only have to connect the TV box and Playstation to the Sync Box. (Also with one HDMI cable each.)
