In our case, the water level indicator reported a lack of water even though the machine was full. When the lid is open and inverted, there are two small pins on a plastic rod in the middle that should make electrical contact with the bottom part. In my opinion, this is a faulty design, as the contacts oxidise after a certain time. I finally short-circuited them. However, the fan always runs, even when there is no water.
In the meantime, we have disposed of the evaporator.
