What does MGO (methylglyoxal) mean in Manuka honeys?
The abbreviation MGO stands for methylglyoxal and is a natural component found in high concentrations in Manuka honey. Researchers at the Institute of Food Chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden, led by Prof Dr Henle, discovered that MGO is the active ingredient in Manuka honey and is partly responsible for its antibacterial effect. Manuka honeys with an increased MGO content of over 100 mg/kg are also known as active Manuka honey. Manuka honey in New Zealand is produced under strict guidelines of the UMF organisation (UMFHA - Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association) to ensure purity and quality. Our producers Manuka Health and Haddrell's of Cambridge are both members of the UMF organisation so you can be confident that you are buying pure Manuka honey with a controlled MGO content.
