5 things you didn’t know about Euros merchandise
You still don’t see them as often as expected in everyday life: German flags in the garden, side mirror covers with a German flag pattern, faces painted in black, red and gold in the streets. But given the success of the German team, the demand for fan merchandise will also increase. Here are 5 facts about fan merchandise sales at online retailer Galaxus that you probably don’t know.
The Euros are all about fans. The greater the euphoria in a country, the greater the demand for fan merchandise. And with mounting success in the tournament comes increased sales of fan merchandise, says sports marketing expert Peter Rohlmann (SWR, Manager Magazin), among others. We’ll show you some facts about fan merchandise at Galaxus that you probably don’t know yet.
1. More Turkish flags are currently being bought than German ones
Two Turkish flags are currently among the top sellers in the Galaxus online retailer’s bestseller ranking. The German flag only comes in third place. In fourth place is France and in fifth place… Turkey again (as of 17 June).
Update: In the latest bestseller check, the Turkish flag was no longer available. It can be assumed that their win against Georgia led to this.
2. Saxons buy the most televisions, Thuringians the fewest
Proportionally to the number of inhabitants, the biggest home for new German televisions during the European Championships appears to be Saxony (numbers taken between 15 May 2024 and 15 June 2024). Lower Saxony and Bavaria are in the solid midrange. Thuringia bought the fewest new televisions. Fellow editor Tobias Heller recently revealed which devices are in vogue. Incidentally, the projector kings are Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. The south-west of the Republic orders them the most.
3. Topps instead of Panini: Professor suggests widespread cheating
American provider Topps has secured the rights to the sticker album for the European Championship. A few star player rights are still held by Panini, so Panini was able to publish a miniature edition. Still, the big booklet is made by Topps. But not all fans are happy with the American brand. Some believe valuable players are less common. According to a report on Swiss television SRF, a statistics professor at the University of Lugano has calculated that this impression is correct. The company denies this, according to SRF. According to the professor, if players were distributed fairly, you’d have to buy 870 packets to fill the booklet on your own. In truth, 1,700 are needed. Sharing pays off either way: if you collect and swap with friends, you can get a complete album on a much smaller budget.
4. Euros pushing Magenta TV
For the first time at a European Football Championship in Germany, all matches can be seen exclusively on Magenta TV. Many games are shown on free TV, but not all of them. This means that in Germany, for example, you could only watch group opponents Switzerland in their first match on Telekom’s streaming service. As a result, two Telekom Magenta TV Sticks or TV ONE boxes are currently in the top 5 bestsellers among streaming media players at galaxus.de. Galaxus currently offers 89 streaming media players. Despite the Euros, Apple TV is still in first place among the bestselling devices (as of June 17).
5. Rebounders for kids are the newest trend
Given the Euros, people are buying more footballs, cleats, jerseys and flags. And given how the game is played, quite a few football goals are being shipped. Rebounders are currently among the bestselling goals. They pass you the ball straight back. This’ll allow future Toni Kroos’ and Alexandra Popps to practise more efficiently, even alone if necessary.
