Samsung First Look: When Samsung does business with Apple
by Dominik Bärlocher
At the beginning of 2019, LG announced that it would be bringing AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to its televisions. Now the time has come, the software update to integrate Apple's wireless transmission technology and smart home standard is ready.
LG will make the latest firmware available from 25 July 2019 and it should arrive on all supported TV sets by the beginning of August. However, the update will not be released for all TV models at the same time.
You can only enjoy AirPlay 2 and HomeKit with the newer TV models from LG. The manufacturer cites artificial intelligence and "second-generation Alpha processors" as a prerequisite for the integration of the technologies.
In concrete terms, LG names the following model series:
OLED
NanoCell
UHD
Traditionally, Apple has used its own technologies exclusively for its own devices. The expansion of AirPlay 2 to televisions from LG and other manufacturers such as Samsung and Sony is likely to be linked to the launch of Apple's own streaming service Apple TV Plus in autumn. As many people as possible, not just Apple users, should be able to watch the films and series from there.
With AirPlay 2, you can easily play content from your iPhone, iPad or Mac on the TV. Without any cable connection. The devices just need to be in the same Wi-Fi network. This can be films and series from the Apple TV app or other streaming services before the launch of Apple TV PLus, as well as your own videos. The wireless transmission technology is also suitable for music and other audio formats.
HomeKit integrates your TV into your smart home. You can then control it via the Home app or Siri. But only rudimentary at first. In other words, you can switch it on and off, adjust the volume or select the signal source. But not yet zap by voice command or start the new episode of the current series season.
When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
