Android 13: Google shows more new features
by Jan Johannsen
Google has released the first beta version of Android 13. It is now no longer only for developers and is easier to install, but it hardly contains any innovations compared to the previous Developer Preview.
In Android 12, the focus was on the design with the change to "Material You" in 2021. According to Google, Android 13 focuses on security and privacy.
This focus was already apparent in the first two Developer Previews before the beta version. Among other things, they brought about a reversal in notifications. In the future, apps will have to get permission for notifications. Until now, you could only deny them after the fact. Apps will also only see the pictures you select and no longer the entire gallery. I have compiled all the new features of Android 13 so far in the following post:
The first beta of Android 13 now brings more detailed access settings. Until now, you could only allow apps to access all or no files on your smartphone. In the future, Android 13 will differentiate between pictures and photos, videos, and audio files when accessing media files.
The improved error messages via Keystore and KeyMint, on the other hand, are mainly interesting for developers. The same applies to the predictive audio routing. Apps that play media get new interfaces to better identify devices available for playback.
The first beta of Android 13 is available for all Pixel smartphones since the Pixel 4. If you have a corresponding device, you can register it for the beta version here. The update will then be available in the settings a few moments later.
Caution. You should not install the beta version on your main smartphone. It is still a test version. Bugs and thus problems in everyday life can be part of it.
Android 13 will also be a topic at Google's developer conference I/O on May 11 and 12. However, new features on the big stage are less likely - even though the second beta is supposed to be released in May. In June and July, Google wants to achieve platform stability with the third and fourth beta versions. After that, the final version of Android 13 is supposed to be released. For all smartphones beyond Google's Pixel models, however, you are dependent on how quickly the manufacturers get their updates to Android 13 ready.
When I was but a young student, I'd sit in my friend's living room with all my classmates and play on his SuperNES. Since then I've had the opportunity to test out all the newest technology for you. I've done reviews at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, and have now arrived at Galaxus.de.
