Back and forth: Spotify and its Apple AirPlay 2 support

A post on Spotify's support forum recently caused lots of confusion. Spotify reacted by announcing the integration of AirPlay 2. When the update will be here remains unanswered.

There’s no AirPlay 2 support for Apple users in the iOS version of the Spotify app. MacRumors discovered a post on Spotify’s support forum about this issue. In the post, an employee claimed that AirPlay 2 integration had been paused. The reason? Driver issues.

This caused quite a commotion. Spotify reacted to the uproar by sending the following statement to US media:

A post on one of Spotify’s Community pages contained incomplete information regarding our plans for AirPlay2. Spotify will support AirPlay2 and we’re working to make that a reality.

So it seems that Spotify will be supporting AirPlay 2 in the future after all. However, it remains to be seen what timeframe we’re looking at. Airplay 2 has been around since May 2018. The protocol is integrated into many speakers und TVs.

Spotify’s own protocol

With Spotify Connect, the streaming service is now offering its very own protocol. However, it’s not integrated in all speakers, televisions or other devices. For Android users, Spotify also offers Google Cast for broadcasting.

The other major music providers, i.e. Amazon, Google and Apple, have been offering AirPlay support in their apps for quite some time.

Testing devices and gadgets is my thing. Some experiments lead to interesting insights, others to demolished phones. I’m hooked on series and can’t imagine life without Netflix. In summer, you’ll find me soaking up the sun by the lake or at a music festival.
