Discord is coming to PS5: after falling through with Microsoft, Sony is up next

Discord messenger service is coming to the PlayStation: after news of Microsoft allegedly wanting to take over Discord for a bit came and went, Sony has now struck and acquired shares in the company.
Just a few weeks ago, Microsoft was rumoured to be looking to take over Discord, a messenger service with around 140 million users, for around $10 billion. Nothing came of it, the takeover talks ended and «Discord Inc.» decided to remain independent. Instead of pondering a buyout, serious consideration is now being given to an IPO in the near future.
It’s quite possible that the online service, originally created in 2015 primarily for PC gamers, never intended to be bought out. Knowing what others value you at can’t hurt. Especially if you want to go public. Sony should also be aware of this.
To bring these experiences to life for our players, Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round.
In the SIE blog, Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, emphasised that a minority investment had led to the partnership with Discord.
It aims to bring Discord and the PlayStation experience together for consoles and mobile platforms starting in early 2022. Whether this means Discord will only be released for the PS5 and future hardware or existing older systems as well is currently unclear. As well as an answer to whether there will soon be cross-platform Discord chats including PlayStation users.
