Thursday is the day. The World Cup of Darts starts and 40 nations duel it out for the crown. The PDC surprises with a fundamentally changed format. Here you can read everything you need to know about the changes and the participants.

The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) is making everything new. From 15 to 18 June 2023, the 13th edition of the World Cup of Darts, the World Team Championships, will take place in Frankfurt am Main. So far, so normal. However, the PDC has completely reorganised the tournament this year: the number of participating countries, the rules and the format. A total of 40 teams of two will step up to the oche (the throwing line) to crown the new Team World Champions - more nations than ever before. Australia will be the defending champions with last year's winning duo of Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock.

The most important change: the entire tournament will be played exclusively in team mode. Individual matches are a thing of the past. This will bring a whole new dynamic to the competition. But the structure of the tournament has also changed.

The four best nations in the world according to the Order of Merit (the official ranking) - England, the Netherlands, Scotland and Wales - are automatically seeded for the second round. In the first round, there will be a group phase of twelve groups with three teams each in "best of seven legs" mode. The winner of a match must win four legs. The respective group winners will then qualify for the round of 16, in which the remaining 16 nations will decide the winner in a knockout system and in "Best of 15 Legs" mode. Only the final will be raised again and the winning team will have to win ten legs to be crowned world champion.

Martin Schindler and Gabriel Clemens will be competing for the host nation Germany this year. The latter shone at the last individual world championship in London's "Ally Pally" and reached the semi-finals. Stefan Bellmont, who was the first Swiss player to win a match on the PDC European Tour a few weeks ago, will take part in the doubles with Marcel Walpen. The German-speaking countries are completed by Austria with Mensur Suljovic and Rowby-John Rodriguez. Bahrain, Iceland and Ukraine will be making their debut at this year's tournament. The current record winners of the World Team Championships are England and the Netherlands with four titles each.
