File Explorer with Tabs: Hidden Feature Found in Windows 11 Insider Build
A hidden feature has been discovered in the latest Windows 11 Insider build that adds tabs to the File Explorer.
Open multiple folders using tabs in a file explorer window. This could become a permanent feature in Windows 11 in the future. Or not, because Microsoft once already tested exactly this feature for Windows 10 and then never delivered it. With the feature called Sets at the time, even every Windows app would have had tabbed support.
Now Rafael Rivera, a software developer at EarTrumpet, has discovered the hidden Explorer Tabs feature in the latest Windows 11 Insider build. So the feature could be coming for Windows users in the future. However, there have long been third-party tools that offer similar solutions.
Whether Microsoft is actually thinking about a timely integration of the tabs internally can only be speculated. On February 3, 2022, the company informed about what the plans are for new Insider Program features this year. And that's when it became clear that Microsoft is leaving all options open. The software maker plans to experiment with more features - including ones that may never ship. On disabled features in this year's Insider builds, Microsoft has also commented:
