Folding was yesterday: Samsung has a retractable display
Samsung and Intel have presented a new display that can be extended from 13 to 17 inches.
The new processors in the Raptor Lake series got most of the attention at Intel Innovation Day, but there was still time after them to show off some innovations for the future - such as Samsung's retractable screen.
Extending instead of buckling
Lenovo and Asus is currently folding notebook screens to satisfy the conflicting need for small devices and large displays. Samsung, on the other hand, is betting on a "slideable display" that can simply be pulled apart and pushed together. Its size ranges from 13 to 17 inches.
As the head of Samsung Display announced on stage, the screen will be available worldwide immediately. For the time being, however, it will only be available to hardware manufacturers and software developers. Only when they have made it into a finished product will you be able to buy anything.
Samsung is accordingly still sparing details on resolution, brightness and the like. It also remains unclear whether it is a touchscreen and whether it is only intended as a stand-alone screen or could also be installed in notebooks.
And yes, the whole thing is reminiscent of pull-out concept smartphones from LG, Oppo and TCL - only bigger.
