Google Pixel 6 leak: specs and new live shots

The California-based tech giant is expected to unveil the Google Pixel 6 series later this year. Live pictures are now circulating, and a leak has revealed further details about the specs.

The rumour mill around the new Google Pixel smartphones has been churning for months. First render images of the drastically redesigned smartphone were published in the spring.

Now, live images are also circulating in Chinese online media. According to Gizchina, the new Pixel 6 will look like this:

These live images match previously leaked renders that revealed Google’s radical new design strategy for the Pixel lineup. However, it cannot yet be confirmed whether the photographed device is actually a fully-fledged Pixel. It’s quite possible that the device is a pre-production model meant to give a feel of the phone.

Not only the colour is new

What is clear is that the Californian tech giant has not only given the phone’s backplate a dramatic makeover. The interior of the new Pixel is also supposed to feature substantial upgrades.

The focus lies on the processor. Back in April, the website 9to5google published a leak about Google’s plans for its in-house systems-on-a-chip (SoCs). According to this leak, the devices in the new Pixel series are supposed to be the first smartphones to run on Google’s in-house SoC, the «GS101 Whitechapel».

To produce these chips, Google is said to be working with Korean hardware giant Samsung, who also manufactures the ARM-based Exynos series. Google appears to be taking advantage of Samsung’s semiconductor infrastructure to produce the Whitechapel chips. Reportedly, the goal is to also install these chips in Chromebooks in the future.

More specs revealed

In addition to the live images, industry expert Jon Prosser has also leaked more details about the new Google phone. Based on the renders, it was already known that the phone will be launched in a basic and pro version.

Prosser has now released the specs for each version on his blog. In addition to the Whitechapel chip, both versions are equipped with Wi-Fi 6E and 5G – and they come with Android Enterprise Recommended (AER) certification.

The base model of the Pixel 6 is said to be codenamed Oriel. It will have a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen, a 50 MP and 12 MP camera combo on the back, and an 8 MP selfie camera. The battery has a capacity of 4,614 mAh. The base model of the Pixel 6 comes with 8 GB of RAM storage and either 128 GB or 256 GB of ROM.

Its big sister, the Pixel 6 Pro, is codenamed Raven. It will have a 7.71-inch OLED display and a triple-camera setup on the back: a 50 MP wide-angle sensor, a 48 MP telephoto lens and a 12 MP ultra wide-angle sensor. At 12 MP, the front-facing camera is a bit more potent than in the base model.

The battery is also a bit more powerful at 5,000 mAh. The Pixel 6 Pro is supposed to come with 12 GB of RAM and either 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB of ROM. Both the base and pro models are supposed to come with Android 12 out of the box. In addition, Prosser emphasises that Google plans to provide software updates for both devices for five years.

Google is expected to officially present the two Pixel 6 phones in October. Before that, however, the Pixel 5a is still waiting in the wings. According to TechAdvisor, the less radical successor to the Pixel 4a will be officially unveiled as early as August and will hit the market in the same month.

«I want it all! The terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles!» – these words spoken by an iconic American TV celebrity could have been mine. It's a take on life I also apply to my job. What does this mean in concrete terms? That every story has its charm; no matter how small, large, exciting or trivial. The more eclectic the mix, the better.
