Handles instead of numbers: Discord introduces new usernames

The four-digit suffix after the user name on Discord will soon be history. The company has announced that users will be able to identify themselves by a unique username in future.
Discord is taking the step away from tags in favour of unique user names. This is necessary because the online service has more and more users, as CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy writes in the blog. This should make it easier to network.
Now you choose a unique user name. This can consist of lowercase letters, numbers, a dot or underscore. As before, the freely selectable and therefore non-unique display name can consist of almost anything. Other users will primarily see your display name. You can change it as often as you like.
By default, the old user name becomes the new display name. So if you were travelling as "PhiBi#8936", you will now appear as "PhiBi". The new username will appear as @something underneath. This is what it will look like:

The changes will be rolled out over the next few weeks. Users will be asked to choose their new username. This will be based on the principle of seniority. This means that those who have been with us for a long time will have the opportunity to choose their new username sooner.
