Healthy and homemade: the rising stars in German kitchens 2024

Germans have been equipping their kitchens with useful electrical appliances this year. In 2024, online retailer Galaxus’s Germany-based customers have so far bought 80 per cent more deep fryers than in 2023. Steamers, rice cookers and dehydrators have landed in shopping baskets 50 per cent more often than last year. And kettles remain the most popular kitchen appliance.

Eating out, ordering in or cooking at home? A question asked daily in most households. Galaxus sales figures show that in 2024, Germans have been investing in their kitchens – and placing importance on healthy eating and home-cooked meals.

A study (website in German) conducted by the market research company GfK revealed at the beginning of the year that people in Germany are eating out less and less often. At the same time, they’re upgrading their kitchen so that they can prepare more dishes and drinks at home and have a wider variety of them.

From air fryers to steam cookers

Small electrical appliances such as toasters and kettles can be found in pretty much every kitchen. But in 2024, completely different products are experiencing a boom. The winner by a few miles is the air fryer. In 2024, Galaxus has sold 80 per cent more air fryers than it did last year. Eight out of ten deep fryers ordered are air fryers. They cook food with hot air instead of oil and are therefore particularly popular with health-conscious people.

«This year, it’s particularly noticeable that the large air fryers are very popular,» says Nicola Brand. Nicola’s responsible for the deep fryer range at Galaxus. «Customers seem to want to prepare more ingredients in the air fryer in one go and therefore tend to buy appliances with a large capacity and several drawers.»

There’s also a noticeable trend in the other products that have sold significantly better this year compared to 2023. Whether it be dehydrators, juicers or steam cookers, they’ve all recorded an increase in sales of around 50 per cent. And they all help the daily kitchen battle of preserving the vitamins and nutrients in your food and bringing the healthiest possible meals to the table.

«In general, products that have as many functions as possible and can prepare different dishes are popular at the moment,» says Nicola. Brands with strong growth at Galaxus in the small kitchen appliances department are Philips, Ninja and Bosch.

The tried and tested last the longest?

Even though extravagant appliances such as dehydrators and juicers are becoming increasingly popular, one perennial favourite has been at the top of the list of best-selling products for years: kettles. For three consecutive years, it’s been the most popular electric kitchen appliance at Galaxus. Nothing beats a hot cup of tea after all. Deep fryers are also experiencing an upswing in top sales in 2024 and take second place, followed by stand mixers, toasters and hand blenders.

Incidentally, egg cookers, bread makers and meat grinders are the losers of 2024. What used to be a must-have in grandma’s kitchen no longer seems to find a place on today’s modern kitchen worktops.
